Tone Bath and Body Wash Review

 Tone Body Wash

(This product was provided to me by BzzAgent in exchange for an honest review.)

You can never have enough body washes, right? At least that's what I told myself when I received this BzzCampaign from BzzAgent.
This is a new product line from Dial. The claim is that they are made with spa-inspired ingredients, and these will leave your skin feeling more moisturized with a natural feeling softness. I received the Petal Soft fragrance, which is Pink Peony and Rose Oil.

Tone Body Wash

Initial Impressions: The first time I used this, I was pleasantly surprised at the floral scent. Straight from the bottle, the scent was really overwhelming to me and I wasn't sure that I was going to be able to use it. But in the shower, on my loofa, it was a whole different experience. The floral tones were lighter, softer, and less overwhelming. The product is thick but not lotiony in appearance (it looks more like a gel, and yes, "lotiony" is a technical term!), and it lathers very well. I actually used too much when I first squeezed it out, because you're just not sure how it works. I liked the way my skin felt immediately post-shower, and didn't feel the need to apply lotion to get that moisture back in my skin. Throughout the day, my skin continued to feel moisturized. The floral scent lingered a little post shower, but within 45 minutes, it was no longer there.
The second day I used this, I wasn't as impressed. But I didn't use as much as I did the day before, because I was really cautious. So I was left wondering if this was a product I would have to use a lot of to get good results.

Final Impressions: With continued use, I have noticed this does make my skin moisturized, and feel moisturized for a long time. But as someone that likes a lingering fragrance (because I really don't wear perfumes), this left very little to be desired. And after use, I noticed it really didn't linger much after a shower. So I could follow up with a lotion if I chose to for the scent, but I didn't really need to for the moisture. I guess I'm used to Bath and Body body washes and lotions, that smell amazing, but you almost need a lotion after your shower because they don't moisturize as well. Plus, finding a lotion to go with this body wash has proved a little difficult, at least with what I currently own.
I would still recommend this, though. It's a reasonable price point, and it does live up to its claims.

Book Review: Growing Up Duggar by Jana, Jill, Jessa, and Jinger Duggar

Growing Up Duggar by Jana, Jill, Jessa, and Jinger Duggar
(This book was provided to me by NetGalley and Howard Books for review purposes.)

Description from Goodreads
In a rare look inside America’s favorite mega-sized family, the four eldest girls talk about their faith, their dreams for the future, and what it’s like growing up a Duggar.Airing weekly throughout the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand, 19 Kids and Counting has made the huge Duggar family into a media phenomenon. The Duggar children are frequently asked, “Tell the truth; do you really agree with the lifestyle your parents have created for you?” Now, the four eldest Duggar girls—Jana, Jill, Jessa, and Jinger—open up about the blessings and advantages of living the Duggar lifestyle.

With a backdrop of the key relationships in their lives—relationship with self, parents, siblings, friends, boys, and God—the four Duggar girls open up about their own personal faith and convictions, boys, dating, manners, living in a large family, politics, and much more. You’ll learn how the family navigates the difficult years between twelve and sixteen and what the girls look for in a man, all in a frank and fun book that will inspire teens and adults alike. Including lighthearted stories about the younger kids’ antics, Growing Up Duggar is a wise and entertaining trip into a family like no other.

My Review
I should probably start off this review by saying I am a pretty big fan of the Duggars. I don't agree with them from a religious stand point, but I think they are good people with big hearts, and they have a lot to offer the world. And I think this book is a good one.

The book is basically the girls telling the world their story, and their principles, and how their family uses the word of God to enhance their every day lives and relationships. If you're not familiar with the Duggars, this probably wouldn't be the book for you if you're also not Christian- the book definitely hinges on you knowing the Duggars and their principles. It also hinges on you knowing the girls in general- the book almost never says who is talking before they just start telling a story, they just start a story and clarify who is telling the story by a parenthetical. I think this could have been done more effectively.

I believe this book would be ideal for a young, Christian girl. Probably ages 12 or 13. This book definitely isn't for a 29 year old agnostic, though, I did enjoy it because of passages like this: "A wise appeal makes a parent, teacher, boss, or anyone else in authority happy because he or she appreciates your respectful attitude, even when you're asking to be excused from what you're being asked to do." And, "Words are like toothpaste in the sense that once they come out of our mothers, they are not going back in." That's just good advice, in general. Granted, it's not unique advise, but it is nice to hear all the same.
I know where the Duggars stand politically, and I am definitely at the other end of the spectrum, so I skipped a couple chapters where I knew I just didn't agree with them. I don't think I missed out on much- it didn't seem like I needed to read those chapters to understand the overall theme.

I gave this book 3 stars on Goodreads. It was a well written book, but you're not going to find anything new here. Especially if you are already familiar with the Duggars. And with basic Christian family values.
You can purchases the Hardcover of this book here, or a Kindle copy here.

New Beauty Test Tube March 2014

The New Beauty Test Tube is back, and has redeemed itself (to me) for January's lackluster box!

For whatever reason, the picture I took of the tube itself has just disappeared! Gah. So I'll just get right into it...

It's A 10 Miracle Lite

Simple Cleansing Facial Wipes (7 wipes - Full Size is 25 wipes)
Stop rubbing and scrubbing with harsh chemicals that irritate skin, and try something simpler. These ultrasensitive cleansing wipes effectively wash away impurities without upsetting delicate facial skin.

Will I Use It?: I have used a couple of these so far, and I really, really like them! They're not irritating at all, and I feel like they get most of my makeup off. They're also not super moist, which I really like as well. Funny enough, I purchased a pack of these when I ran out of my other makeup wipes, but hadn't used them yet, so I'll get to use a full pack as well to do a complete review later.

Will I Use It?: I am planning on trying it, but I haven't yet. This is the other product that entirely pays for my box- it's $40.00! I will definitely do a review when I've had a chance to use it.

YBF perfect prep face primer

Will I Use It: I've used this a couple of times, and I like it. It makes my bare minerals go on super smooth, and does even out some tonal problems I have. It also helped keep my makeup on longer. I'll do a full review a little later, but my initial impressions are good!

Now for what was in my beauty-to-go bag...

sukiface exfoliate foaming cleanser

This Exfoliating cleanser from Sukiface is awesome! I've used it twice and I really like the results. It also smells like lemonheads.

phytomist instant hydrating conditioner

I haven't used this yet, but it's a conditioning mist from Phyto. I don't really want to use this on a day I care too much about what's going on with my hair, so I might try it out Saturday, when I'm just going to a morning movie (Divergent!), and then I can just throw my hair in a messy bun and shower when I get home if I don't like what happens. I'll report back later!

philosophy full of promise

Another philosophy product, this one is Full of Promise. I think this is geared towards an aging skin type, so I might pass this off to my mom.

radial stemcell super-food facial oil

Another Radial pack to get one to two uses out of... joy. I wish I could just have a bigger sample of this because I did like it the last time they sent this to me.

So I am EXTREMELY happy with this box! I received two full sized products, both of which had either the value or over of the box. And everything in it I have used or am going to at least try, except a moisturizer that is considered an extra anway. New Beauty really hit it out of the park with this box!
I'm definitely going to be keeping this subscription through May!

FTC: This box was purchased by me with my own money. All opinions are my own. All product descriptions were taken directly from the New Beauty Test Tube catalog included with the box.

Pinspiration: Spring Nail Ideas

Happy First Day of Spring!
I'm not usually one for "theming" my nails to a particular season, but pinterest has me "pinspired" to give some of these nail looks a try!
(Clicking on the photos will take you directly to the pin so you can pin it to your own boards. All photos are credited to the appropriate blog, which you can reach by clicking on the pin from pinterest.)

 photo springnails_zpsb6593b1e.jpg

Ahh! So Cute! I wish I was talented enough to do nail art like this- maybe I could give the polka dots a try!

 photo springnails2_zps69c40140.jpg

Also so super cute! To me, yellow nail polish just screams Spring (and Summer, too)!

 photo springnails3_zpsa88253b8.jpg

I think this would be so super cute for a Spring wedding as a guest, or a bridal or baby shower.

 photo springnails4_zpsb6593b1e.jpg

I did a variation on this last year around Easter, and got a lot of compliments! To me, it's just the perfect, pastel nod to Spring!

Obviously you can wear whatever polish you want, and I rock a dark nail in Spring as quick as I rock a bright nail in the Winter. But there really is just something about a cute, pastel nail in the Spring!

Neutrogena Triple Repair Hair Care System Review

Neutrogena Triple Repair Hair Care System

(This system was provided to me by BzzAgent in exchange for an honest review.)

I am currently taking part in a BzzAgent Campaign for the Neutrogena Triple Repair Hair Care System. This system includes a Shampoo, a Conditioner, and a Leave-In Treatment. The claim for the Shampoo and Conditioner is that it mends 97% of split ends with just one use. The claim for the Leave-In Treatment is that it reduces breakage by 80%, leaving hair stronger, smoother, and more nourished. It also states it protects against heat styling up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Initial Impressions of the Complete System: The first time I used this complete system, I was underwhelmed. The Shampoo was alright, the Conditioner seemed to work well, and the Leave-In Treatment seemed to make my hair soft, even after blow drying, but my hair was so greasy by mid-day! I was actually thinking about finding a store close to my work to buy a tiny bottle of baby powder, that's how bad it was!
I used it again a couple of days later, and my hair seemed a lot better. I also curled my hair, and the curl held well, my hair remained soft and untangled, and I did not notice the excess greasiness that I experienced the first time I used this system.
As far as the claims are concerned, I did feel like my ends were okay, but I lost a lot more hair than I have been when using my Tresemme Platinum Strength Shampoo and Conditioner. The Leave-In Treatment definitely made my hair feel nourished, and after use, I didn't notice any more hair loss (even when I curled my hair and brushed it out a bit later in the day). That is not typical for me- I have very long, fine hair, so I pretty much leave it wherever I go. This was a nice surprise.

Just the Shampoo and Conditioner: I was a little nervous to do so, but decided to try out just the Shampoo and Conditioner, with no extra leave ins or oils after my shower. And let me say, I LOVED the results. I usually let my hair air dry for about 20-30 minutes (depending on how long after a shower it takes me to lotion and put my makeup on) prior to blow drying. I didn't use a heat protectant or anything, which leaves my hair looking like a huge poof, and then I need to straighten it to get it flat again (if I have time- usually it just does what it does because I don't leave myself time for that step). However, that didn't happen after I completed the drying process on my hair when using just the shampoo and conditioner- my hair already looked like I had straightened it, but it still had that bit of volume that comes with blow drying. Overall, I enjoyed the results of this first experiment. So I had to try it again! And again, received the same results!

Just the Leave-In Treatment: I decided to use this in combination with a few different shampoos and conditioners I have (The Tresemme one mentioned above, the Not Your Mother's one I reviewed here, as well as the Dove Shampoo and Conditioner I received in my New Beauty Test Tube from November 2013), and overall, the product is pretty good. It still leaves my hair feeling nourished, it didn't react weird with any of the other brands, and made my hair soft and easy to manage. I did have a bit of grease mid day with the Tresemme shampoo and conditioner, but with the Not Your Mother's, my hair felt great and looked clean until late evening. I definitely found a great combination for the future!

Final Impressions: After using this for almost a month, on and off, I've been loving the results! On the days I use the three products together, my hair looks and feels amazing. I haven't noticed my hair color fading at all, and I do feel like it has helped to restore some damage. I feel like the leave in has helped protect my hair from heat damage. As far as the split ends claim goes, I got my hair trimmed about 2 inches in the midst of using this product, so I can't attest to that claim. But even my hair girl commented that my hair felt a lot more healthy than it has felt the last couple of times she's cut my hair, and I definitely attribute that to using this.
I am already thinking about repurchasing the complete system- and have coupons from BzzAgent so that I can do so! I highly recommend if you have damaged hair, you check out this system. It's inexpensive (all three are $6.99), and you can see results within a few uses.

Book Review: This Star Won't Go Out: The Life and Words of Esther Grace Earl by Esther Earl with Lori and Wayne Earl

This Star Won't Go Out by Esther Earl

Description from Goodreads
A collection of the journals, fiction, letters, and sketches of the late Esther Grace Earl, who passed away in 2010 at the age of 16. Photographs and essays by family and friends will help to tell Esther’s story along with an introduction by award-winning author John Green who dedicated his #1 bestselling novel The Fault in Our Stars to her.

My Review

How do you review a book about someone's life? How do you review a book about someone's life that ended so abruptly? How do you review a book about a young person's personal experience with cancer?

It's these questions I asked myself when thinking about my review of this book. And ultimately my thought is that you can't review a book like this. You can instead talk about the effect it had on you personally. Which is really what all my reviews come down to anyway.

Esther was a brilliant writer, a bright star in her world, and she was diagnosed with cancer. And she dies. That's not a spoiler- it's a fact. And it's right up there in the description. But just because she died at a young age does not mean she didn't have an impact. She had a great one, and now I am one of those people that has been impacted by her.
By her wonderful prose, and her cute drawings, and her spunky attitude. Her need to do something with her life, even though it was a short one. To be upset about her prognosis, but not get discouraged and just let it completely take her over. As John Green says in the intro, "Esther was wholly alive, as alive as anyone else... She did not leave slowly, but all at once, because even when she could not get out of bed, she found ways to be fully alive. "

The book is full of her personal journal entries, entries by her parents, and stories from her friends- beautiful, wonderful, thought provoking, insight driven, and devastating stories. The hardcover book is color coded for the different entries, and includes wonderful images. I'm not sure if the ebook includes the same things, but the description of the ebook says it does, so I really hope so!

Although this book did make me really, really sad, it also made me happy- to know such a person existed and touched so many lives, and that she will continue to do so long after she is gone, is just beautiful. And to know her dream of becoming a published author came true is also beautiful.

I gave this book 5 stars on Goodreads. Because it touched me so profoundly. Thank You, Esther, for reminding me of the need to live completely and love infinitely.

You can purchase the hardcover of this book here, or the Kindle copy here

FTC: I borrowed this book from my local library, and fully intend on purchasing it with my own money soon. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Birchbox March 2014

It's time for my March Birchbox!

I looked at the spoilers for my box, because I just had to know! I like to research.

So here's what I am getting, and how I feel about it (I am writing this portion before receiving the box and trying anything in it):

- Agave Healing Oil Treatment - Another hair oil to try! So far, I've had really good look with every one I've tried, so I'm not complaining about getting another!
- Air Repair Rescue Balm All-Purpose Skin Salve and Lip Balm - This is probably the thing I'm least excited about- I use Rosebud Salve as an "all purpose", but I guess it would be nice to try something new!
- Caudalie Vinosource Moisturizing Sorbet - This says it's gentle, hydrates skin, and reduces redness. I've heard good things about the Caudalie brand, and this will be my first time trying anything by them, so I'm really excited!
- COOLA Tinted Matte SPF 30 for Face - I'm always interested in trying new tinted SPF, whether it's a tinted moisturizer, a BB, a CC, etc, so this should be fun to try! It's also mattifying, so I'm interesting in testing out those claims on my oily skin!

- Jergens BB Body Perfecting Skin Cream - This sounds like an interesting concept - it goes on clear, but adjusts to your skin tone, and helps reduce imperfections. I'm actually kind of looking forward to trying this.

And now, the box!

(I love the reminder on the inside to review the products for points- I think too many people don't take advantage of this!)

march 2014 birchbox
Agave Healing Oil Treatment
Created by a veteran hairstylist, this lightweight oil uses agave to hydrate and protect.
How To Use: Warm a dime-sized dab of oil between your palms and distribute it throughout damp hair evenly, from roots to ends. Air dry for a natural look, or blow dry for a sleeker style. And don't stop there- this also doubles as a hydrating body oil!
How It Works: The amino sugars in agave soothe damaged hair and infuse it with moisture. This fragrant healing oil treatment is also packed with plenty of other natural conditioning ingredients to keep hair soft and sleek: vanilla, coconut, and baobab seed oil, to name a few. And it’s free of the stuff that’s not so good for your locks: parabens, sulfates, and phthalates.
Will I Use It?: As I said above, I do love a good hair oil. The way this sample comes, it might be a little difficult to use, but I'm definitely going to try it out!

march 2014 birchbox
Air Repair Rescue Balm
Balms away! This all-natural salve repairs dry, cracked skin anywhere on the body.
How To Use: Apply whenever, wherever to soothe dry, flaky skin and seal in long-lasting moisture.
How It Works: This ultrarestorative salve works its magic by preventing transepidermal water loss, a primary cause of dry skin. Sweet almond oil, fatty-acid rich lanolin, and vitamin E hydrate and nourish skin upon contact. Anti-inflammatory lavender helps quell irritation, while geranium promotes circulation and rejuvenates skin.
Will I Use It?: I actually did use this, and the results feel typical to a vaseline. Also, the sample was really weird to open, and I just ended up cutting the tip off because I had no clue how to get the product out. That might have been user-error, but really, it should be obvious how to use a sample. I'll keep using this, but I don't think it's something that will leave too big of an impression on me.

march 2014 birchbox
Caudalie Vinosource Moisturizing Sorbet
A refreshing, gel-like formula that floods skin with hydration and reduces redness.
How To Use: Morning and evening, spread evenly onto both hands, and apply to face in even, outward-moving strokes.
How It Works: The patented blend of organic grape water (key to reactivating your skin’s hydration mechanisms), soothing chamomile, and grape-derived polyphenols (which are rich in antioxidants) deliver a triple threat of hydration and redness reduction. The formula is gentle enough for hyper-sensitive skin.
Will I Use It?: I plan on using this at night, in case I do have a reaction to it, and I'll report back when I feel like I've been able to form a good impression.

march 2014 birchbox
Coola Tinted Matte SPF 30 for Face
Organic tinted moisturizer with lasting sun protection that evens tone and masks flaws.
How To Use: Smooth a thin layer onto clean skin.
How It Works: This is no ordinary SPF. COOLA suspended two skin-safe mineral sunblocks—titanium and zinc dioxide—in a moisturizing base to ensure a smooth, even application. Shea butter naturally softens skin. Age-reversing antioxidants like evening primrose extract and borage seed oil deflect free radicals, while naturally water-resistant plankton makes the formula extra-durable.
Will I Use It?: I'll give any tinted moisturizer a try once. Again, this will be a product I'll check out and have to get back with you guys on.

And my birchbox find (an "extra" product that is mass market that they think is awesome, and not a part of my usual samples) this month is
march 2014 birchbox
Jergen's BB Body Perfecting Skin Cream
This skin-perfecting formula will brighten your skin—just in time for the arrival of spring.
How To Use: Use this cream daily for best results. Once a day, smooth generously over skin and let dry completely before getting dressed.
How It Works: This fast-drying moisturizer goes on sheer before adjusting to your natural skin tone. With shea butter, the cream provides moisture while light-reflecting pigments immediately brighten skin and minimize the appearance of imperfections. Not only that, but the proprietary formula works to improve your complexion over time, firming skin while also calming redness and visibly reducing discoloration.
Will I Use It?: I actually used this as my leg moisturizer before a wedding, but I didn't notice a difference from a standard lotion. I didn't notice it "adjusting" or making a difference in redness, but it did feel moisturizing. Maybe with a more continued use, I'll see a difference, and there is enough in my sample for at least a full week's worth of use, if not more. I'll do a follow up blog about this product as well.

Overall, after receiving my box, I am reasonably okay with it. I'm still on the fence about birchbox in general, and may end up either getting an ipsy bag to replace or in addition to, and then deciding which one is better.

Tarte Be MATTEnificent Amazonian Eye & Cheek Palette Review

tarte Be MATTEnificent

Today I'm going to be reviewing the tarte Be MATTEnificent Amazonian Eye & Cheek palette! I purchased this palette for myself as kind of a birthday gift, because the second I saw it, I knew that I needed to get my hands on it! I've been having a serious obsession with matte shades lately!

(Blush shade is Elevated; Eyeshadow shades (Left to Right, Top to Bottom) are Sand Out From the Crowd, Peach for the Stars, Two Plums Up, Pink Outside the Box, Rose for the Occasion, and View from Taupe; as well as Dream in Chocolate and Don't Stand Black)

These swatches aren't the best, but I swear this palette has been worth every penny. I have been using it almost every day since receiving it in the mail, whether it is for the blush, the brown and black shadows which are used great as liners, or even just for a great matte color. The shadow quality is phenomenal, and they most blend extremely well.
And the blush is just beautiful, and has great staying power. Now I know why the amazonian clay blushes get so much hype! I never would have purchased one on my own, and now I'm already looking at my budget to figure out when I might be able to invest in a couple more.
The mirror is also a really good size, and the palette will stay open on it's own if you set it on a table- perfect for travel or if you don't have a dedicated area to do your makeup.

As far as what I don't like, there are a couple of things- a couple of the shades aren't as pigmented as I would like for them to be, and the black and brown shadows are a little harder to blend. However, nothing in this palette is difficult to work with, and when I'm focusing on using just this palette, with the right brush, I can make any of the shades work.

And speaking of brushes, this palette does come with a double-sided one. It's decent enough quality, but if you're looking for a brush that will be able to do everything, you're not going to get it with this. I have tried to make an eye look work by only using the brush with the palette, and I've had to grab another blending brush, as well as an eyeliner brush, to really do much. So if the brush is your selling point, I would definitely really take a look at more swatches and reviews before I base my decision to buy on that.
Some of the shades are also pretty similar to the matte shades in the Lorac pro palette. I was a little worried about that when I bought it, but ultimately, being able to have the blush was a huge selling point.

If you're looking for a good, matte palette, this is one worth your time, if you don't already have enough matte shades to you're liking. And also if, like me, you were on the fence about those amazonian clay blushes.
This was a limited edition palette, but you can still find it from online retailers.

Lorac Pro to Go Review

 lorac pro to go

Today I'm going to be reviewing the Lorac Pro to Go Palette.
I've been using this palette since the beginning of the year, on and off, and I've been really impressed by the versatility offered by it!

The palette itself comes with 6 eyeshadows- three shimmer shades on the top (Pearl, Chai, and Mink), and three matte shades on the bottom (Shell, Cafe, and Black). The Pearl shade can also double as a highlight shade.

It also comes with two blushes (Coral and Pink) and a bronzer (Bronze) as well as an eyeshadow and eyeliner brush. For a girl that loves neutrals like me, this is a great every day palette.
The shades are also super soft. If you can tell in the picture of the eyeshadows above, I've accidently hit the base of my brush into the Chai shade a few times, and because the shadow is so soft, it just takes a chunk out. Luckily, they haven't been very big chunks.

(Swatches with Flash, eyeshadows are from top to bottom, left to right, and the end shades are the blushes and bronzer)

So, how does this compare with the regular Lorac Pro? The only shade that is the same is the matte black, which means you are getting 5 other completely unique shades, and you're also getting two blushes and a bronzer. So it's really a completely different palette.
It's also a really nice addition to the Lorac Pro- I've used them together multiple times, and can get so many different looks.

Do I think this is a must have? For someone that either loves Lorac, or doesn't have a lot of shadows, or is looking for a great travel palette, it absolutely is. And I constantly find myself wanting to go back to it when I put it away, mainly for that gorgeous coral blush. So it's a must have for me!
