Pinspiration: Pretty Eye Looks

I love doing my eye makeup. It is my favorite part of doing my makeup, and what I spend the majority of my time on.

One of the things I love doing most on pinterest is just browsing all the beautiful eye shadow looks, drawing inspiration from them about ways to do makeup in my every day life. If I have an event coming up, I try to search by the type of event (wedding, party, girl's night, etc), or I frequently look at "professional" wear.

Here are some of the best looks I have seen lately.
(As always, clicking on the picture will direct you to the pin.)

 photo smokeyeyewithgoldshadowpin_zpsbb778f49.jpg

I love this look so much, I just think it's perfect for a fun night out, and the way the shimmer catches the light is just beautiful.

 photo simpleeye_zpsc8dbb25b.jpg

This is so simple but so gorgeous. I have worn my makeup this way (with a different color), and received so many compliments. It is especially flattering for those of us that wear glasses.

 photo makeupgeekpeachandblueeye_zpsc7b9a9a6.jpg

I love the color combo of this look. I'm a huge fan of blue and green eyeshadows (they're definitely my go to  shades when I'm looking to play around with color), and I think the addition of the soft yellow and orange make the look pop.

 photo greysmokeyeye_zpsf785b4e1.jpg

A pretty grey smokey eye. Much more subtle than black, and, for me at least, a much more flattering option.

 photo mmimspiredeye_zps6664d7cc.jpg

I think this is just really classic and beautiful, and perfect for every day. Especially in a professional setting.

 photo purplesparklyeye_zpsdec82daf.jpg

And, finally, this beautiful purple look. I love this, especially for my green eyes- they just pop when I use purple.

I hope this is helpful to those of you looking for a little inspiration to shake up your eye makeup looks! I know I already have all of the colors I need to attempt to recreate all of the looks, and I can't wait to try!

Book Review: Inferno by Dan Brown

 photo infernodanbrown_zpsbf3d48e2.jpg

Description from Good Reads
In his international blockbusters The Da Vinci Code, Angels & Demons, and The Lost Symbol, Dan Brown masterfully fused history, art, codes, and symbols. In this riveting new thriller, Brown returns to his element and has crafted his highest-stakes novel to date.

In the heart of Italy, Harvard professor of symbology Robert Langdon is drawn into a harrowing world centered on one of history’s most enduring and mysterious literary masterpieces . . . Dante’s Inferno.

Against this backdrop, Langdon battles a chilling adversary and grapples with an ingenious riddle that pulls him into a landscape of classic art, secret passageways, and futuristic science. Drawing from Dante’s dark epic poem, Langdon races to find answers and decide whom to trust . . . before the world is irrevocably altered.

My Review
I'm a fan of the Robert Langdon novels. I really like him as a character, and find the stories to be interesting. I love the way Dan Brown incorporates real things into his fictional stories. Although, I do spend quite a bit of time when I'm reading his novels looking up the art he talks about, the science behind the story, and the organizations he is hinting at. I think it does help me better understand the story, and what is behind the action.

I really enjoyed the amnesia element- I thought it was an interesting way to follow the story. Robert Langdon not knowing how he got somewhere? Not having the slightest inkling that maybe he's already been in this exact situation?? It was a great storytelling device.  And I also enjoyed the way he brought The Divine Comedy to life, and introduced me to the history and art referenced in the process. Part of the story, to me at least, is researching what he's talking about, and learning more in the process. But there came a point where I really felt like I was spending more time researching and less time enjoying the story.

The story begins with Robert in a hospital, a doctor being shot, and him being rescued by a young woman named Sienna. Isn't it always a young woman for Robert? We quickly learn Sienna is a genius with a 208 IQ. So, following the basic formula, Robert is now looking for something with a beautiful, young, intelligent woman.

He is also being chased, trying to find a biological weapon before it gets released, or before anyone else is able to.

The weapon itself was created by a man who tries to warn the WHO (World Health Organization) of the population growth (this was very interesting, and I spent a couple of hours researching- the gist is that our population growing at the rate that it is will virtually wipe out all of our natural resources within 100 years), doesn't get what he wants, and decides to take matters in his own hands. So we follow Robert and Sienna, looking for clues that we know Robert has already discovered answers to, however, due to the amnesia, he is having to relearn all of the information he already knows.

The man who created the weapon is Bertrand Zobrist. About 1/2 way through the story, we actually find out Zobrist was at Robert's university under the Humanity Plus, or H+ Summit.
Here's another point that made me a little angry at the book- these H+ symbols were all over Harvard during the summit, and the symbologist Robert Langdon did not look into what it was? That stuck me as a clear story device, and not true to who the character is.

The story continues in typical Brown fashion- getting chased and barely escaping, ducking into corridors and running for your life. And eventually they come to a point where you find the truth- and then comes the twist with Sienna, which I won't ruin, but I was actually shocked. I didn't see it coming. I believe I said "Oh, wow" while I was reading it. And we find out what the virus that Zobrist created actually does, with about 50 pages left to turn the book around.

I gave this book a three star review on GoodReads, which is not on par with his other books- the others I gave four stars to, except Angels and Demons, which got a five star review.
I'm trying really hard not to spoil what I felt was a pretty good novel with twists I didn't see coming. However, it gets three stars because half the time I read the novel, I was spending time researching and not enjoying the story, and half of the other half of the time, I was thinking to myself that I can already see the movie in my head. Like, he wrote this knowing there would be a movie. The other books didn't read like this one, and I was a little disappointed. The other ones actually did explain the history behind the art and the organizations, where I feel like in this one, you were just expected to know what everything was. And I didn't know what everything was. And I have read The Divine Comedy, though it's been quite a few years. But a little more explanation would have been nice. I couldn't imagine not reading The Divine Comedy and reading this book- I think I would have been totally lost.

QVC New Beauty Test Tube Summer-Fall 2013

Another week, another unboxing!
This week, I bring you the QVC New Beauty Summer - Fall 2013 Test Tube. I previously received the Summer 2013 box, and loved it, so I signed up for auto delivery. I saw the spoilers for this box initially on the My Subscription Addiction blog (which, if you love subscription boxes or seeing what is in them, I highly recommend you follow her because she gets almost all of them!) and was instantly excited!

And I was not let down. There is only one product for sure in this box I'm not going to use.

On to the unboxing!

The box itself is so cute! It's bright pink and makes me so happy to see!

 photo QVCNewBeautyTestTube_zpsf8993e94.jpg

And here are all of the products that came in my box!

 photo QVCNewBeautyTestTube2_zps3a296052.jpg

The box contains a copy of the Summer/Fall 2013 New Beauty Magazine, 8 products, and a catalogue showcasing all of the products and providing information about the products.

 photo QVCNewBeautyTestTube5_zpsd296101b.jpg

The magazine has Stacy Kiebler on the cover. I have not been able to read this yet, but I really enjoyed the magazine in the Summer box, minus all of the plastic surgery stuff.

 photo QVCNewBeautyTestTube4_zps3825e35a.jpg

And this is the catalogue that comes with it. It is probably the most detailed of all of the subscription services.. Usually it gives a little tidbit about the product, key ingredients, how to use, and more information about the company itself.

Now, the real reason you came to this blog - to see the products!
Also, I tried a little something different with these photos, but I'm not sure if I like it. Let me know what you all think!

All descriptions are directly from the catalogue. Included also is the size of sample I received.

Ole Henriksen Ultimate Lift Eye Gel (.25 fl oz)
Hectic schedules and busy day-to-day routines may leave you feeling exhausted, but that doesn't mean you have to look that way. Help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eye area with this eye gel for a completely refreshed look.
How to use: Apply gently under the eyes, extending toward the temples.
Benefits Include: Night Shift - This dual-action cooling gel works hard while you sleep so you can wake up looking younger and more refreshed than ever before; Youth Refreshment - Wrapping the eye area in calendula and cucumber while a complex of peptides infused with arginine helps to keep you looking revitalized; and Hydrating Humectants - Enriched with the moisturizing power of humectants, the lightweight gel provides optimal hydration to smooth the skin around the eyes.
Will I use it?: I have actually used it, and I like the sensation it gives me. It is very cooling (I bet it would be even better if I stuck it in the fridge), and I have noticed the area under my eyes looks more moisturized in the morning. I've read online that some women use this during the day, but I would only ever use it at night. I haven't had time to notice any real difference, but like I said, I have noticed my under eyes look more moisturized.

 photo PhilosophyHopeinaJarAdvancedSmoothingBodyLotion_zpsc80a96b8.jpg

Philosophy Hope in a Jar Skin Advanced Smoothing Body Lotion (4 fl oz)
This lightweight, antioxidant-rich body lotion features an advanced skincare formula that helps smooth and hydrate for healthier-looking skin.

Will I use it?: I have used this as well, but don't have any real opinions formed yet. It smells okay, and the scent doesn't seem to linger too long after application. My skin definitely did feel moisturized, but no more than it usually does with a standard lotion. I will continue using it to form a definite opinion.

 photo OjonRareBlendProtectingTreatment_zps5bf20ac9.jpg

Will I use it?: Yes, I am looking forward to using this! I always try to use a heat protectant before doing any sort of heat styling on my hair (it's damaged enough from coloring), and I like the "dual" aspect of this product.

Will I use it?:
Here is the swatch, I think it's a really pretty color, I'm just going to have to mess with it to see how I feel.
 photo LauraGellerWaterproofEyeSpackleHuesAdvancedPrimerandEyeshadowSwatch_zps5b824715.jpg
I wore it once, however, I guess I didn't read the whole thing and used my Too Faced Shadow Insurance prior to using this product, so although it didn't crease, it may not be strictly because of this product. I am also going to use it for layering - the color itself I felt wasn't the most flattering alone on my lids, but maybe on the outer corners would be okay.

 photo AlternaBambooVolume48-HourSustainableVolumeSpray_zps6ff8c9da.jpg

Alterna Bamboo Volume 48-Hour Sustainable Volume Spray (.85 fl oz)
Put an end to dull, flat, lifeless hair with this lightweight spray that nourishes strands while creating long-lasting volume. Made with bamboo extract, this spray is sure to provide you with sustainable style.
How to use: Spray throughout clean, towel-dried hair before blow-drying.
Benefits Include: Long-Lasting Effects - This spray helps to increase volume for up to 48 hours in-between washings and it works on even the finest hair; Boosters - The formula is comprised of ingredients to give you a boost in volume without parabens, phthalates, synthetic color, mineral oil and petrolatum; Lightweight Finish - The ultralightweight texture won't weigh hair down or leave it feeling sticky or dry and crunchy. An added bonus: it smells amazing!
Will I use it?:  I did use this one day, but didn't notice a huge volume difference- but I was running late so I didn't fully dry my hair. This stuff really does smell amazing. I will definitely try it again when I'm not running so late so I can really test it out.

 photo AlgenistGentleRejuvenatingCleanser_zpse5a8ceba.jpg

Algenist Gentle Rejuvenating Cleanser (1.5 fl oz)
Infused with anti-aging and deep-cleansing ingredients, this facial cleanser leaves skin feeling fresh and younger-looking, sans any harsh ingredients.
How to use: Apply to moist skin, lather for one to two minutes and rinse with warm water.
Benefits Include: Anti-Aging Powerhouse - Alguronic Acid and the fruit complex work together for the appearance of more radiant, youthful-looking skin; Complexion Smoother - Thanks to the dynamic cleansing duo of witch hazel and oat amino acids, skin feels softer and appears smoother; Gentle Formula - The gentle cleanser is a non-irritating unique formula that is free of parabens, phthalates, triclosan, nitrosamines, synthetic fragrances or synthetic dyes.
Will I use it?: I have used this a couple of times, and I'm not sure if it is it or something else, but something is making my skin super red. It's not itchy or anything, so I'm pretty sure it is this- because I get reactions to witch hazel. I always forget until I use something with witch hazel in it, and then bam, red skin. Luckily I've only used this at night, and by the morning it has gone away. I may use it a couple more times just to be sure that is what is actually causing a reaction, otherwise, I'll have to pass this on to someone else.
It does feel and smell great, though.

 photo MallyBeautyLipMagnifier_zps3b7953d0.jpg

Mally Beauty Lip Magnifier (.10 fl oz)
This is not your grandmother's lipstick. It's called magnifier for a reason- this unique formula is designed to amplify your pout with fierce, long-lasting color for soft, luscious lips that stand up to whatever the day might bring.
How to use: Apply all over lips.
Benefits Include: Multitasking Magnifier - While adding the perfect amount of shine and long-lasting color, this creamy formula also works to nourish and condition lips; Just Right Texture - Glossy, but firmer than gloss. Rich color but softer than lipstick. Unique texture clings to lips to last and last; Confidence Booster - This lip-perfecting formula might leave every woman feeling like she can conquer the world.
Will I use it?: No. I'm actually really disappointed with this product. I used it one to test it out, and there are a couple things that really disappointed me- the color (punch) is not at all flattering on me, the texture doesn't do much for me, and the fact that it doesn't twist up the product, you have to sharpen it?! Total deal breaker. There is no reason why this shouldn't be a twist up, and since this product is pretty soft, it would waste a lot to sharpen. I definitely will not be using this, but I'll try to gift it to someone instead of just throwing it away or hording it for no reason.

 photo BlissBloodOrangeandWhitePepperSoapySuds_zps4a9141b6.jpg

Bliss Blood Orange and White Pepper Soapy Suds (1.5 fl oz)
Take your bubble bath to the next level with this unique sudsy formula that works to hydrate and soften skin for a bath time routine that is both relaxing and refreshing.
How to use: Use as a body wash to shake up your shower, or pour a bit into the bath for bubbling bliss.
Benefits Include: Skin-Softening Trifecta - Enriched with the moisturizing trio of aloe, glycerin and vitamin E, this formula delivers powerful hydration for noticeably softer, suppler skin; Versatile Formula - A relaxing soak in the tub doesn't exactly fit in your schedule? No worries - you can rev up your shower when you opt to use this as a body wash instead; Luxurious Lather - This unique-scented soap works into a rich lather that feels as luxurious as it looks.
Will I use it?: I have used it a couple of times, but haven't formed any real impressions yet. I do enjoy the smell!

Extra Post: Book Review: Rose Harbor in Bloom by Debbie Macomber

 photo roseharborinbloomdebbiemacomber_zps3f322942.png
(I received this book to review from NetGalley)

Description from Good Reads
Hailed as “the reigning queen of women’s fiction” (The Sacramento Bee), #1 New York Times bestselling author Debbie Macomber is renowned for her novels of love, friendship, and the promise of fresh starts. Now Macomber returns to the charming Rose Harbor Inn, where each guest finds a second chance and every room comes with an inspiring new view.

Since moving to Cedar Cove, Jo Marie Rose has truly started to feel at home, and her neighbors have become her closest friends. Now it’s springtime, and Jo Marie is eager to finish the most recent addition to her inn. In memory of her late husband, Paul, she has designed a beautiful rose garden for the property and enlisted handyman Mark Taylor to help realize it. She and Mark don’t always see eye-to-eye—and at times he seems far removed—yet deep down, Jo Marie finds great comfort in his company. And while she still seeks a sense of closure, she welcomes her latest guests, who are on their own healing journeys.

Annie Newton arrives in town to orchestrate her grandparents’ fiftieth wedding anniversary celebration. While Annie is excited for the festivities, she’s struggling to move on from her broken engagement, and her grandparents themselves seem to be having trouble getting along. Worse, Annie is forced to see Oliver Sutton, with whom she grew up and who has always mercilessly teased her. But the best parties end with a surprise, and Annie is in for the biggest one of all.

High-powered businesswoman Mary Smith, another Rose Harbor Inn guest, has achieved incredible success in her field, yet serious illness has led her to face her sole, lingering regret. Almost nineteen years ago, she ended her relationship with her true love, George Hudson, and now she’s returned to Cedar Cove to make amends.

Compassion and joy await Jo Marie, Annie, and Mary as they make peace with their pasts and look boldly toward their futures. Rose Harbor in Bloom is Debbie Macomber at her heartwarming best.

My Review
This was a very sweet book. It was a quick read, and a nice palate cleanser between two books that were pretty intense.
I had never read a book by Debbie Macomber, so I didn't really know what to expect. What I got is a very sweet romance, a little fluff and a light read. Nothing was too intense, and most everything was predictable.

There's nothing wrong with predictable- as I stated, this was a great palate cleanser and sometimes it is exactly what you need.

The book centers around the Rose Harbor Inn, and predominantly around the inn keeper, Jo Marie Rose, her "handy man" Mark, Annie Newton and Oliver Sutton, both in town for Annie's grandparent's 50th anniversary, and Mary Smith, who came to Rose Harbor to make amends with her true love, George Hudson.

I really thought Jo Marie and Mark's relationship was going somewhere else, but I have a feeling this is a relationship the author wants you to become invested in. Plus, Mark is not super open, and Jo Marie is still dealing with the death of her husband. The death is a big plot point, and I believe, based on my reading, it was in the first book as well.
I enjoyed Jo Marie as a character, but I think Mark needs to start letting some of those secrets go if the reader is going to become more invested in a potential relationship.

Annie and Oliver make an interesting story. Annie planned her grandparent's entire 50th anniversary party, and Oliver drives them. Annie had recently broken an engagement off, and part of the story deals with her decision, and the other part of their story deals with how she feels about Oliver.
I actually didn't really like Annie as a character that much. I didn't feel like she was as fleshed out as Jo Marie or Mary, and I with the author would only focus on one side story instead of two.
I didn't feel invested at all when Oliver and Annie finally start getting together.
I did enjoy the relationship between their grandparents. It reminded me somewhat of my own grandparents. (Not so much the bickering, but the obvious love and affection.)

Mary's story was my favorite of the three. She is suffering from cancer, and comes back to make amends with George. Their story broke my heart, and ultimately just made me so happy in the end. Mary has a deep dark secret she is keeping from George, and when she finally told him I let out a breathe. Like, I was involved in their past love affair or something.
(Hi, I'm Ashley and I get way too invested in the life of fictional characters.)

I really enjoyed the ending of their story, too. I felt like it was perfect.

I didn't know this book was part of a series when I started reading it, and I haven't decided if I want to check out the others. But it appears she did a slight follow up on the stories from the first novel, so I wonder if that is something she will be doing often. And this book definitely left the story open for a third novel.

I gave this book three stars on Goodreads- I liked it, but I won't be rereading it, and I haven't decided if I will look into others from the series. Overall, I did enjoy the novel, but something was lacking.

A Little Something Different: Unboxing the Samsung Chromebook

I wrote about how much I wanted the Samsung Chromebook in a Wishlist Wednesday post back at the beginning of July. I started saving, and now I own it! I thought it might be fun to do an unboxing.

Obviously this isn't a book, and it isn't a beauty product, but it is a new tool I'm using for blogging. I had a little Acer Netbook which was okay, but the size was slightly limiting. The screen on this chromebook is bigger, and the battery life is also way longer, which means I don't need to be tethered to my charger when I'm writing a 3+ hour post (like my Allure Fall Beauty Box blog from Tuesday of this week- that took me right around 4 1/2 hours or more, but it was worth it!).

On to the unboxing!!

 photo chromebook_zps88d04b56.jpg

My chromebook came in a box that looks like this. I bought mine from Best Buy, mostly because I wanted it right then, and amazon no longer had it on sale.

 photo chromebook2_zps2d9623d8.jpg

When you open the box, you see the booklets (user manual, warranty info, etc) and the actual chromebook, which is inside a sleeve.

 photo chromebook3_zps876b9340.jpg

The chromebook also includes a power cord for charging. The booklet says you can run it right out of the box, but I went ahead and hooked it up to charge as well.

 photo chromebook6_zps683eabf5.jpg

These are the booklets that are included.

 photo chromebook8_zps143e8444.jpg

I took the chromebook out of the sleeve, and it looks like this. It is very sleek and thin. It's practically weightless. I've read reviews of people saying it seems flimsy, but to me it seems very sturdy- I have it on my lap right now and I don't feel like it's going to break or anything from pressing down on it.

I booted her up- and there was practically no sound. No fan, no noise, nothing.

 photo chromebook9_zps25eb3284.jpg

This is what the start up screen looks like. I would say this screen was up for maybe a few seconds, before prompting me to log in with my google account. This is something you need to know if you are interested in a chromebook- you have to have a google account.

And for comparisons sake, this is my netbook next to my chromebook.

 photo chromebook10vsacernetbook_zpsf7151ecc.jpg

So far I've been very impressed with the chromebook- As of this post, I've had it for a few days, and have basically attempted to do everything I do on my netbook. So far, the only thing I haven't been able to get this chromebook to do is load pictures from my camera to it. This computer doesn't install anything like drivers, so it's possible I won't be able to do that. So I am going to keep my netbook for that purpose. (I've had the netbook since 2009.) I can just log into my google account, put the pictures in Google Drive, and then they automatically show up on my chromebook (100gb of Google Drive is including for free for two years with purchase of the chromebook). From there, I can edit them (basic editing, like cropping- but you can download different picture editing apps to do additional editing if need be), and upload them to my photobucket.

This system is entirely run off of chrome, so it can only do basic functioning connected to application and the internet.

The chromebook itself doesn't get hot at all- as I said above, I have it on my lap, and I am perfectly comfortable. I'm not worried about burning my legs or anything like that. It feels like nothing is even there. It also charges quickly- I got a full charge from about 10% battery life in about an hour. And one charge can last me anywhere between five and seven hours, depending on what I am using this for- I watched four full episodes of Orange Is The New Black from Netflix, and it dropped me from a 95% charge down to about 35%, which is great. Especially considering I could barely watch one full episode of a half hour show on my netbook, and that's if it decided to let me watch video (when it was brand new I could watch video no problem, but the battery still only would like me watch two - three episodes of a show before dying).

 photo chromebook5gollacase_zpse60f9825.jpg

I also purchased this case from Best Buy. It's actually for a 14" MacBook, not an 11.6" Chromebook, but I like that there is plenty of room for the chromebook, the charger, and my USB mouse. I could probably also fit my netbook in there if I really wanted to! And the front pouch is perfect for a notebook- I have two little ones that I'm using for blogging and reviews, and they fit in there securely and with plenty of room remaining.

If you're looking for a laptop to do basic internet functions, this is perfect! It was $249.99 (plus tax), and the case was $29.99 (though on the Best Buy website it says $39.99 now, I think I got it on sale).

If you have any questions about the system itself, please feel free to leave questions in the comments and I will answer to the best of my ability.

FTC:  I purchased the chromebook and case with my own money. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I am in no way affiliated with Samsung, Google, or Best Buy.

Book Review: The Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick

 photo thesilverliningsplaybook_zps30ade617.jpg

Description from Good Reads
An enchanting first novel about love, madness, and Kenny G.

The Silver Linings Playbook is the riotous and poignant story of how one man regains his memory and comes to terms with the magnitude of his wife’s betrayal.

During the years he spends in a neural health facility, Pat Peoples formulates a theory about silver linings: he believes his life is a movie produced by God, his mission is to become physically fit and emotionally supportive, and his happy ending will be the return of his estranged wife, Nikki. When Pat goes to live with his parents, everything seems changed: no one will talk to him about Nikki; his old friends are saddled with families; the Philadelphia Eagles keep losing, making his father moody; and his new therapist seems to be recommending adultery as a form of therapy.

When Pat meets the tragically widowed and clinically depressed Tiffany, she offers to act as a liaison between him and his wife, if only he will give up watching football, agree to perform in this year’s Dance Away Depression competition, and promise not to tell anyone about their “contract.” All the while, Pat keeps searching for his silver lining.

In this brilliantly written debut novel, Matthew Quick takes us inside Pat’s mind, deftly showing us the world from his distorted yet endearing perspective. The result is a touching and funny story that helps us look at both depression and love in a wonderfully refreshing way.

My Review
This wasn't a "feel good" book to me. I know so many people are saying that it is, but it just wasn't. But that doesn't mean it wasn't a really good book, or that I didn't enjoy it. I just didn't feel great about it until the end. I guess that was the "Silver Lining".

The book centers on Pat Peoples, who was just released from a neural health facility. He lives with his mother and his father, due to he and his wife Nikki needing "time apart". He sees a therapist once a week. He works out constantly. He openly cries. He has manic fits of anger. And he believes that his life is a movie produced by God, and that if he lives his wife in a certain way, his life will ultimately result in a happy ending.

He also loves The Philadelphia Eagles. All the men in the novel do. It's definitely a way they relate and interact with each other- especially Pat and his father, Patrick. It's actually pretty much the only way they do ever relate to one another.
Even his therapist gets in on the Eagles action. As a football fan myself, I found those parts of the book almost as exciting as every other part. I also remember so much of what he is talking about- I'm not an Eagles fan, but I watch a lot of highlights!

My favorite character in the entire book is his mother. I just felt for her so deeply throughout the whole book. Her husband doesn't really appreciate her in the way he should. One of her sons seems pretty well adjusted, but the other is in a neural hospital and is coping with his life.
I love that she bought Pat all these nice clothes, and a nice home gym set up- that's what a mother does! Her baby is broken down on the inside, so she's trying to help him with his outside.

So many people on both Goodreads and Amazon are calling this "The Adult Perks of Being a Wallflower" and, in a way, I agree. But it's all surface stuff (the "crazy" narrator, the public crying, the writing (Charlie in letter, Pat in a journal), the big secret, and the unreliable narrator). But The Silver Linings Playbook shows a lot more end growth of the character, and how to deal with the consequences of your choices. I enjoyed Perks, and think I would probably say that was the better book had I read it in high school. But since I recently read it, I have to say this is the one I relate to more.

The Book vs. The Movie
The first thing I can say about the book vs. the movie is I did not like Patrick, Pat's dad, in the book at all. But I really liked him in the movie. Maybe it's because of the actor that plays him (Robert De Niro), but I felt like he was a much more sympathetic character. In general, the dad was just a completely different person, with a completely different job, and a completely different outlook on Pat and life.
The character of Danny was definitely a different species, but had the same basic premise- a guy that was a friend of Pat's in the neural health facility. However, everything past that was different.

In the movie, Pat is only away for about 8 months. In the book, it's significantly longer.

Pat doesn't seem to have as close a relationship with his brother in the movie as in the book. As a matter of fact, they barely interact in the movie. And going to the Eagles games only happens once, not every home game.
But the reason Pat's dad can't go with them is the same.

The Hank Baskett / DeShawn Jackson jersey thing REALLY bothered me for some reason. To me, it was a really big part of the book.

The whole dance thing (the competition, and the song) was completely different. But the reason behind it was the same.

And the end was... well. It's similar enough, but it's not a "movie" ending.

With that said, I still really, really love the movie, and think Jennifer Lawrence deserves all the praise she got from the role. But I think if I was a huge fan of the book before seeing the movie, I probably would have been disappointed with all the changes.
As a big book reader, this frequently comes up, and it's really not a big deal to me anymore. I just thought it would be worth noting some of the differences.

The book itself isn't what I would consider a happy book, but it does make you believe in the Silver Lining. I gave the book a 4 star rating on Good Reads, and do recommend it. But if you saw the movie first, or you love the book and haven't seen the movie... prepare yourself for differences.

You can purchase The Silver Linings Playbook here for Kindle, and here for a physical copy. You can purchase the movie here. Or you can borrow a copy from your local library!

FTC: I borrowed this book from my local library.I purchased the movie with my own money.

Allure Fall Beauty Box Unboxing

I received my Allure Magazine Fall Beauty Box in the mail on 08/09/13, and I thought it would be fun to do an unboxing of all of the products that I received!

 photo allurefallbeautybox_zpsb933bd6e.jpg

The box itself really wasn't anything exciting, and really didn't show where it was coming from. Which I really didn't mind- it's what is inside the box that I was excited for!

 photo allurefallbeautybox2_zps5b53ee11.jpg

When I opened the box, there was a brochure listing all of the products, and they were all divided in the box with styrofoam. I pretty much just lifted the divider out (the chambers were too small for me to put my hands in come of them), and started digging!

 photo allurefallbeautybox3_zpse7a4dd30.jpg
(the front of the brochure shows an overview of everything that is inside)

 photo allurefallbeautybox4_zps5a5d45f5.jpg
(here are all of the products in the box, waiting to be discovered)

ALL OF THE PRODUCTS!

 photo allurefallbeautybox5_zps0b9ae101.jpg

I will probably do a follow up of this post where I review some of the products I have used- this is just a complete overview of the products received.
All descriptions are directly from the brochure that came with my box. I have also included a how to use, which I have obtained from the websites listed.

 photo burtsbeesrevitalizinglipbalmwithblueberryanddarkchocolate_zps8b20fa41.jpg

Burt's Bees Revitalizing Lip Balm with Blueberry & Dark Chocolate
A rejuvenating lip balm infused with Blueberry-Seed Oil and Cocoa Powder- both known for their antioxidant properties- plus conditioning Cocoa-Seed Butter. (burtsbees.com)
How to use: Apply balm liberally to your lips as often as needed, particularly in dry, cold or windy conditions.
Will I use it?: I'm going to give it a try. I haven't been super impressed with their lip balms in the past, so I have low expectations.

 photo carolsdaughtermonoirepairinghairmask_zps2514f319.jpg

Carol's Daughter Monoi Repairing Hair Mask
Experience 96% less breakage after one use! This deeply repairing treatment nourishes your hair from roots to ends, undoing damage and preventing future breakage. #monoimagic (carolsdaughter.com)
How to use: Massage gently into clean, wet hair, giving a little extra love to your frazzled ends. Leave the treatment mask on for 5 to 7 minutes and then rinse well. TIP: For an extra-deep treatment, put on a shower cap and sit under a hood dryer for 10 to 15 minutes. This will help the nourishing ingredients get deep into your hair. Best results when used weekly.
Will I use it?: Yes. As I have stated before, my hair is damaged. I've been doing some research and think it will be quite useful. I'm going to try it out. I have to be very careful about masks because some can leave my hair weighted down, but in looking at the texture of this product, I don't think that will be a problem. At least, I am hopeful that it won't!

Cetaphil DailyAdvance Lotion Ultra Hydrating
The clinically proven, moisturizing formulation provides fast-acting hydration for 24 hours. Apply this noncomedogenic lotion to skin daily for all-over use. (cetaphil.com)
How to use: Use daily for optimal hydration. Apply liberally as often as needed.
Will I use it?: I was actually really excited for this product, too, because I have never used a cetaphil product. I've heard really great things about their cleansers, and I know the lotion is really popular amongst people with eczema. I don't have eczema, but I have some dry patches that I'm interested if this can help.

Goldwell StyleSign Magic Finish Hairspray
This radiant gloss hairspray protects and enhances color brilliance with long-lasting hold. (goldwell-northamerica.com)
How to use: Spray onto dry hair.
Will I use it?: I'm not one to use hairspray every day, or even once a week, but I will definitely be giving this a try! I'm interested to know if it really does enhance my color. Also, on the can it states this allows for easy brush-out, so I'm interested to know if it does that as well. My hair gets super tangled and hairspray and it are not good friends.

How to use: Shake. Spray 10"-12" from dry hair to seal in finished style.
Will I use it?: Yes, I actually used it on Saturday! I do feel like it helped my hair from getting frizzy, and my hair was nice and shiny. I will definitely use it again!

How to use: Cleanse twice a day. Wet face. Apply to hands, add water and work into a lather. Massage face gently. Rinse thoroughly.
Will I use it?: I've used this multiple times since receiving it, and so far I'm enjoying it. I actually have used this product before, but never did repurchase, since I'm a product girl and like to try new things. I will definitely continue using this!

 photo NeutrogenaRapidToneRepairNightMoisturizer_zps2776af8a.jpg

Neutrogena Rapid Tone Repair Night Moisturizer
Fastest retinol formula with vitamin C, clinically proven to visibly reduce the look of dark spots and discoloration in one week. (neutrogena.com)
How to use: Apply evenly to cleansed face and neck every day. Turn pump to "closed" position when not in use.
Will I use it?: I have also been using this nightly since receiving my box. I haven't noticed any changes yet, but my skin isn't irritated by it at all, so I will keep using. I'll be sure to update if I notice any tone repairing!

 photo NeutrogenaTRIPLEMOISTUREDeepRecoveryHairMask_zpsb45919bd.jpg

Neutrogena TRIPLE MOISTURE Deep Recovery Hair Mask
Intense hair treatment as moisturizing as the leading prestige hair mask- at one-tenth the price. (neutrogena.com)
How to use: After shampooing, apply a small amount to wet hair, concentrating on ends.  Let penetrate for 3 to 5 minutes.  Rinse well.  Style as usual.
Will I use it?: Yes. Just like with the Carol's Daughter hair mask, I plan on using this every once in awhile. This product gets really great reviews, so I am excited to try it out!

 photo pixieyebrightliner_zpsdfcc87e6.jpg

Pixi Eye Bright Liner
This precision inner-rim liner enhances the whiteness of the eye, giving the illusion of larger, brighter eyes that appear more awake. (pixibeauty.com)
How to use: Line inner lower rim of eye - the area between your eye and lower lashes- for an instant eye brightening effect. This is a tried & true makeup artist trick and it works with great effect both for everyday life and it looks amazing in photos. The liner is waterproof so it will not move or run.
Will I use it?: I have also used this, and was also very impressed. I really enjoy the Tarte emphasEYES, and this seems like it's pretty much the same product. But this one is cheaper, and as of writing this post, I've had it on for about 8 hours and it still looks the way it did when I first put it on. I will definitely continue to use it.

 photo LaRoche-PosayRedermicEyes_zps6c0ce390.jpg

La Roche-Posay Redermic Eyes Dermatological Anti-Aging Eye Corrector - Intensive
A 2011 Allure Best of Beauty Award retinol treatment winning formula, now available for the sensitive eye area. Combines pure retinol + caffeine for visible results against crow's-feet wrinkles and dark circles. (laroche-posay.us)
How to use: Apply morning and evening on thoroughly cleansed face, moving from the inside of the eye area outwards and extend to the temples.
Will I use it?: Yes. Granted, I don't have any deep wrinkles, but I do have some tiny (basically insignificant, that only I can see) fine lines. I've read this stuff is basically a miracle worker, so we'll see how it works on teensy baby lines.

 photo redkenallsoftargan-6oil_zps90da604a.jpg

Redken All Soft Argan-6 Oil
This one luxurious oil has six amazing uses for achieving silky softness on dry, brittle hair. (redken.com)
How to use: Apply on dry or damp hair concentrating on the mid-lengths and ends. Re-apply on dry hair as needed.
Will I use it?: Yes, I'm actually really glad this was included in the box, because I am almost out of the Josie Maran Argan Oil that I received in my Summer QVC New Beauty Test Tube.

 photo redkensatinwear02preppingblow-drylotion_zps6dd989ee.jpg

Redken satinwear 02 prepping blow-dry lotion
Transform hair to silky luxury with a faster, easier, stress-free blow-dry. This protective heat-styling lotion helps reduce breakage. Satinwear also protects hair from heat tools up to 450 degress. (redken.com)
How to use: Apply to damp hair and blow-dry.
Will I use it?: Yes. I am a huge fan of blow-dry lotions, and love that most of them multitask as a heat protectant. Upon further research, I've also discovered this helps protect hair from UV Rays, which equals color protection! I have already used this a couple of times since receiving the box, and have been very impressed. My hair dried very nicely, and evenly, and didn't seem as tangled.

Will I use it?: I haven't decided if I'll be trying this out myself, or if I'll just be gifting it to someone. I'm not sure how I feel about waxing, and my skin is really sensitive.

Will I use it?: Again, I love nail polish. I do have a color that is similar to this, but I will still use it. I have heard the Sation nail polishes are a little thin, and need a few coats to become opaque, so I will keep that in mind when applying.

Then I received a product not listed. The brochure stated I should receive the Tibolli Hair Oil, however, this was no where to be found. Instead, I received the GK hair taming system serum with juvexin.

 photo GKHairTamingSystemSerumwithJuvexin_zps9466ace6.jpg

GK Hair Taming System Serum with Juvexin

Anti-frizz, smoothing serum with enriched with Argan oil. (gkhair.com/us/en)
How to use: After towel-drying, apply a small amount of serum to the lengths of hair.Style as normal, applying an tiny amount after styling to smooth down frizz.
Will I use it?: Sure! It seems like a product I might find useful, and it has Argan Oil, which I really enjoy.

I also received the following bonus sample in my box. I almost wonder if this is due to me not receiving the Tibolli Hair Oil, but there wasn't anything said about it, so I can't be sure.

 photo RoCRetinolCorrexionSensitiveNightCream_zps1e2fd866.jpg

RoC Retinol Correxion Sensitive Night Cream
(there is no description in the brochure, this is taken from amazon)
This gentle, lightweight formula contains a unique blend of powerful anti-aging ingredients know to fight wrinkles: RoC Retinol, a clinically proven wrinkle-fighting ingredient that works to keep skin looking younger for longer; and hyaluronic acid, which helps bind the essential moisture in your skin to hydrate and re-plump wrinkles. (rocskincare.com)

This is normal and should be temporary until your skin adjusts. Apply a sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher during the day while using this product. Continue using a sunscreen for one week after stopping use of this product. If you have never used retinol products before, begin by limiting use to every other night, then gradually increase frequency to once a night as tolerated.
Will I use it?: I plan on using this sample, but I don't think it will be enough to form a lasting opinion. We shall see!

Overall, I am extremely happy with the products that I received in this box. Even though I didn't receive the Tiboli Hair Oil, I am actually just as happy with the serum! And the bonus sample, even though it's a foil packet, will still be used, and was a nice surprise. I think the price I paid versus what was received is incredible ($39.99 plus tax and shipping for over $300.00 worth of products)! And, as you can see above, I am planning on using a majority of these products! I'm very happy I went ahead and bought this box, and will definitely be looking into purchasing again in the future!
